American adults reported having sex an average of 54 times a year in the 2010s — roughly once a week. In the late 1990s the same survey recorded 62. The decline shows up in every age group, every marital status, and every region, which rules out most of the easy explanations.
The largest single driver is that more people are living without a partner, and partnered people are having sex less often than partnered people used to. Married people still report more than the unmarried, but the gap narrowed as married frequency fell faster.
